This comm hasn't been updated for almost a year but hopefully somebody will see this.
Does Merced have any sort of gay-straight alliance? How many gay/bi/etc students are there? Is it an accepting atmosphere?
And how is the political atmosphere? Not just what side people are on, also how actively involved they are.

Wow, thanks. I'm only a junior in HS so it'll be a while, but I'll probably apply.
The main appeal to me for UCM is the fact that it's new so if I think it's not that great, it should be easy to change things. I might try to start the GSA, if I go there.
It's just the fact that it's in pretty much the middle of nowhere. I've been telling people I'll only go to New York or Boston. So it depends where else I get in.
What do you think of academics? It seems focused mostly on math and science, am I right?

GSA

As far as the atmosphire of Merced as a town goes, while it is a little more conservative, it's not horribly toward either direction.

At the high school, they even started up a GSA in 2006 (I was one of the founding members) and they have been met with almost no resistance from peers. In fact about 80 people showed up at the high school level for the Day of Silence the first year.
